Jan Lessem, M.D., Ph.D.
Clinical and Medical Affairs
Dr. Lessem joined ORTHOCON® in January 2012 to lead the company’s clinical and medical affairs. Throughout his career, Dr. Lessem has held several positions within the pharmaceutical industry with varying degrees of responsibility. He most recently served as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Advanced BioHealing (ABH) which was acquired by Shire plc (LSE: SHP, NASDAQ: SHPGY) in June 2011 for $750 million in cash. Previously, Dr. Lessem served as CMO and Executive Vice President at CombinatoRx, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of combination drugs, where before retiring in February 2007, he introduced seven programs into the clinic. Prior to joining CombinatoRx, Dr. Lessem was CMO and Executive Vice President at Orapharma before it was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in February 2003, and was responsible for the clinical development and approval of the lead compound Arestin. Prior to joining Orapharma in 1998, Dr. Lessem spent three years as Medical Director at Takeda America Research and Development Center and was responsible for the clinical development of Pioglitazone in Diabetes. Prior to that, he was Director of Clinical Cardiovascular Research at Merck. Before embarking on his career in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Lessem spent 10 years in Academia in Sweden. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Rheumatology and is board certified in Cardiology in Sweden, and was an Associate Professor of Cardiology and Geriatrics. He has published close to 200 papers. Dr. Lessem holds an M.D. and a Ph.D. from the University of Lund in Sweden.
